Roberta Queiroga is a contemporary artist whose practice unfolds at the intersection of gesture, energy, and spatial awareness. Trained as an architect, she brings a nuanced understanding of space, rhythm, and materiality to her abstract compositions, where instinctive, spontaneous mark-making meets a refined, architectural sensibility.

Born in Brazil and shaped by life across four continents, Roberta’s work carries a rich cultural resonance. Influences from Brazil, Portugal, Japan, and Aotearoa New Zealand merge into a visual language that is both intuitive and expressive, rooted in movement yet mindful of space. Her paintings invite immersion, revealing layers of energy and subtlety, from bold, vibrant gestures to contemplative monochrome realms.

Roberta’s practice has been recognised internationally. She has exhibited at the Auckland Museum, been a Parkin Prize finalist, represented New Zealand in a global exhibition of women artists in Dubai, and undertaken an artist residency in Japan, which continues to inform her explorations of line, space, and rhythm.

At the heart of Roberta’s work is a commitment to the expressive potential of gesture: how a single mark can carry energy and emotion, and how viewers might find their own reflections within the dynamics of each surface.

The artist, Roberta Queiroga, a woman in a gray sweater smiling, leaning on a table with paint bottles and brushes, with yellow and black abstract art in the background.

A series of elegant abstract minimalistic and monochromatic paintings predominantly black on black.

In this series I embrace simplicity while incorporating subtle yet powerful movements evoking emotions, engaging the viewer's imagination and inviting contemplation.

The minimalistic approach of the compositions aimed at reducing the visual noise and inviting the viewers for introspection, by projecting their thoughts, memories and experiences onto the artworks.

Contemplation collection

street carnival Collection

Inspired by the multi-sensory energy of the street carnivals of Recife and Olinda (Brazil), this series translates their colour, rhythm, and joyful chaos into layered abstract works. Each piece is built through multiple painted layers, some intentionally hidden, others leaving subtle textures that hint at what lies beneath. Finished with resin, the works capture a sense of sparkle, movement, and celebration.

Vibrant, mismatched, and compositionally unexpected, this collection departs from my usual minimalist palette as a homage to the spirited, unfiltered freedom of these cities. Created while immersed in carnival rhythms like frevo, the paintings carry the pulse and exuberance that shaped them.

Artwork displayed at the Auckland Museum, split vertically into two halves: one white with black and gray splatters and smudges, the other black with white splatters and lines, creating a dynamic abstract composition.

inside out reverse

Inside Out Reverse” body of work is composed of a series of diptychs exploring the dichotomy of emotions inherent to the lives of citizens of the world and their hybrid hearts with multiple homes. In between the “ME” here and the “ME” elsewhere, there is a void occupied by my heart that merges, expands and flows between both worlds.

Under the visible personas, there is a multitude of layers of concealed emotions and feelings that resist, exist, and coexist that are not detachable from our existences.

A few of the testimonials I received on the Inside Out Reverse:

“I saw your artwork at the Auckland Museum - it really was spectacular. I especially liked your artist's statement about it - which really helped me understand it, and reflect on the two lives of a Brazilian Kiwi. Thank you for sharing that work with us - it really was magical.” S.L.

“Olá Roberta, fiquei encantada com sua obra Inside Out Reverse no Museu de Auckland. Muito obrigada pela leitura de sentimentos tão presente! Te seguindo agora para acompanhar mais o seu trabalho!” J.B.

The continuous dialogue between Intuition and Rationality Chapters I, II and III

When I was creating “The Continuous Dialogue Between Intuition and Rationality Throughout Life - ChaptersI, II and III" I found myself pondering the intricate interplay of intuition and rationality throughout my life journey. The background colours of the triptych mirror the different phases of my own existence. In my reflection, the black strokes vividly embody the enduring presence of intuition that has been with me from the very outset. Conversely, the white strokes poignantly signify the rationality that society impressed upon my early years.

And now, as I stand in the present moment, I find that I trust more in my own intuition. This artwork, in essence is a visual narrative of my personal odyssey through the interplay of these fundamental forces, as testament to my evolving relationship with them.

The triptych is partially stretched and beautifully framed in solid rimu wood. Acrylics on canvas. 61cm (w) x 135cm (h)

Abstract painting with horizontal panels in red, orange, and yellow, with black, white, and gray brush strokes.
